REVISED PLANS FOR THE FUTURE OF THE PALACE Plans for the demolition of the Palace Amusements complex in Asbury Park are transpiring rather quickly. If these current plans are approved, the 115-year-old complex and its iconic wall paintings, a long-time favorite of Springsteen fans everywhere, could be replaced by a new smaller structure which owners say would be built "in the spirit" of the historic Palace building. On March 20, 2003, during a meeting with Palace preservation advocates, the owners showed conceptual drawings of what a replacement building might look like. The proposed structure appeared similar to the current one, with a glassed-in dome on the roof, but considerably smaller than the current complex. The replacement would be attached to a raised walkway with an atrium leading from a hotel next door. According to the present owners, the drawings have the support of both the City of Asbury Park and New Jersey's State Historic Preservation Office, and will be their position when the they apply to the State of New Jersey for construction permits. The owners also stated that "certain parts" of the existing Palace, including the images of Tillie, would be removed from the current structure and incorporated into the design and 'flavor' of the new replica Palace. While these revised plans represent a change in thinking on the part of Palace owners, swaying from earlier plans to replace a demolished Palace with condos. they are, however, subject to review by state officials and must comply with New Jersey's coastal zone laws before taking effect. These plans could still face tough opposition as the Palace is listed on both the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places.
